He was born in the seventh year of Zhenghe (117 years), and was the legitimate grandson of Emperor Huizong. Since the founding of the Song dynasty, there had not been a legitimate grandson of the reigning emperor, which greatly pleased Huizong. Cai Jing petitioned to appoint the imperial grandson as the Acting Minister of State and the Military Governor of Changde, and to confer upon him the title of Duke of Chongguo, to which Huizong agreed. Wang Fu assisted in governance, plotting to seize power from Cai Jing, claiming that Cai Jing regarded the Crown Prince of the Eastern Palace as the emperor, thus demoting Zhao Chen to the Defense Minister of Gaozhou. In the first year of Jingkang (1126), Emperor Qinzong ascended the throne, promoting Zhao Chen to Acting Minister of State, Military Governor of Zhaoqing, and Prince of Daming. He was further promoted to Acting Crown Prince Tutor and Military Governor of Ningguo. In April, he was officially established as the Crown Prince.
